Customer most helpful reviews 84 of 84 people found the following review helpful. A very capable NAS box by Atlantic This is a short term assessment and an overview of the principles. I'll talk about some things that I, as important to my buying decision. I will update this review with more information as it develops. PROS setting - I have not used all features yet, but the basic Disk Station (DS211), established is easy if you are familiar with the concept of the NAS, users, rights, etc. If you're not, not really difficult and there are many online references to help you get started. I've used a single WD 640GB drive for my first test, and had the software / hardware installed, configured (with SHR), and the user / brochures / privileges granted in about one hour, including time required for the Drive to prepare. ADMIN - DSM 3.x (Disk Station Manager v3.2 build 1922 current as of September 6, 2011) is a relatively polished interface used to manage your NAS box storage, applications and users to create users, shared folders and assign privileges to each one is easy and after distribution of the folder, disk / network Windows (password), Explorer looks like any other device. DSM 3.x is packed with features and applications, including website / blog hosting to-date versions of Apache / MySQL / PHP, FTP access, multimedia DNLA transfer station Sound / Music iTunes server (Squeezebox can be removed), Internet Options radio, support for Android Smartphone / Windows / iPhoney, USB printer support (Synology control list), Bit Torrent downloads, etc, and a large community of third-party applications, you may be able to find any program you want. UPDATE: I have not updated to v3.2 DSM 2 still try the new features, including the amazing ability to multi-terabyte array in minutes to hours to build, but the good news is that all past Synology products able to use the software ** Important - Synology website before you buy new wheels. Synology has released one of the most important and regularly updated, lists compatible hard drive, I could find. Models with two bays that you can create a RAID 0 or 1, JBOD, and Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) use - an open source Unix / Linux as a mirrored RAID 1 - depending on your needs and it is important to select records for your selected option to received. In a 2-year warranty and would have been very supportive. My pre-sales questions were answered all - not once, but always within a reasonable time. There is broad community support online, third-party software, wikis, FAQ, forums, etc. and Synology seems about its products and its customers a significant advantage in today's nursing Sell-it-and-forget-it environment. CONS - These problems can be small, but is a bit 'expensive for an empty box NAS is white (I prefer black), blue "power" is too big / bright, and the money that they really USB 3.0 or eSATA (it has 3 USB 2.0). Drives are not hot-swappable, it takes a long time he had to format both drives in RAID 1-2, even if a drive fails and you need to rebuild a table. UPDATE - the time for formatting a 1TB drive is a few hours, so it's not really bad at all and DSM 3.2 can reduce this to less than 15 minutes (see previous note). OTHER THOUGHTS & Buyer's Guide - If you are looking for Synology NAS will enter into a professional (well most of Seagate / WD / Iomega / DLink boxes) and expect a little 'more. All Synology NAS boxes now share DSM 3.x software features so as not to let the software will be your guide. Instead, select a model based on performance and hardware capabilities such as CPU, memory installed, eSATA ports, SD card reader, etc. Need a 2-bay, or larger event? Fast backup to duplicate / share data requires only one disk (single copy redundancy in the original) and a Synology Disk solutions provide the same or better performance than a two-bay models (like the DS111 has an eSATA port). Again, you get the same stream, download,.
