Wampler's been a while since I started a new NAS system, and I am completely impressed with this device. It is almost completely painless. Now all computers in my house may have plenty of storage, backup, and sharing of all data, video, photography, music and files that are likely. MY ENVIRONMENT I am a Computer Engineer - was on the field for 35 years, so I'm picky about my hardware. I have a house with CAT5 hardwired via a WiFi router main machines are Macs, but there are also some computers running Windows. This device supports Time Machine - and support works perfectly and without pain. I also have a pair of DLNA media devices have, so that's an important feature. The ReadyNAS can also connect USB drives and they are readily available on the network - so all my old external USB drives are not vain with this upgrade. THE GOOD (Great, really) * This unit is as close to plug and play, as I've seen in a while, there is a configuration, a bit "long - but we're dealing with terabytes of disk space that must be organized, and to correct for X-RAID striping. * You can connect new drive to expand capacity as needed. * Works seamlessly in a mixed Mac / Windows / DLNA media storage environment * Redundant continues even after a single disk failure. I feel all my Pictures and video are now safe (although still has an extra off-site backup, just in case.) * Fast - almost as fast as a directly connected USB but now available to all computers in the house. * You can install additional software to securely access your data anywhere on the net. LESS THAN THE GOOD * There is a setting called MTU of network interfaces. default setting did not seem quite right for the Mac - 1492 to change things fixed. But a call to Netgear support solved that question so, I would be their support is very good * Not cheap - but I've spent years producing all my videos, photos and music - and I think the simple interface of this is worth the price. * The term "Shares" is not really as good as I would like to explain. Which device to get? I decided to be a little more to spend on this device - it's the latest technology - especially the older Netgear units. I decided four disk drive and the single core unit would probably be the best cost / benefit ratio. With this device, with the help of 2 TB Western Digital Caviar Green SATA 64 MB Cache IntelliPower Bulk / OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS (they look just work so far - though still not on whether the list for this device) you can receive up to 6 TB redundant storage (recovering from a single disk failure). I think they eventually support 3-4 GB hard drives. 7 of 7 people found this review helpful. Avoid this product and Netgear! By Stevo Lambo My first installation went smoothly, but the device was really slow and I was able to use the Netgear utility After endless e-mail exchanges with support they told me to call her for help. I did. It went downhill from there. NetGear support is the worst I've ever experienced. I was willing to pay for support to solve my problem. But when I bought this product, and not quite fill it with drives, refused support team to me after almost 1 hour on the phone to answer their questions and ridiculous is added to support more buying support contracts. The money is not the problem here. The refusal to help me. I'm sure what my problem may be of a competent support staff to be solved. And I was happy to pay for it. But after spending around various engineers for whom English was poor, poor phone connection, and I was put on hold for at least 50% of my conversation, finally refused to help me, I think, 'I bought a premium product. NetGear has my money and I have produced a stalemate. I recommend.
